New study sheds light on physical activity interventions for older adults in lower socioeconomic groups

A recent systematic review has revealed important insights into physical activity interventions for older adults from lower socioeconomic backgrounds. The study, published in October 2024, explored the effectiveness and acceptability of these interventions, as well as implications for future programme development.

Researchers analysed 30 studies, finding mixed results for intervention effectiveness. The intervention helped people walk more for practical reasons like getting from A to B, but did not meaningfully increase their exercise during free time or overall physical activity.

The study highlighted several key factors that make physical activity programmes more appealing to older adults in lower socioeconomic groups:

  1. Social connections: Interventions that fostered social interactions were more popular.
  2. Health benefits: Emphasising the positive health outcomes of physical activity increased engagement.
  3. Accessibility: Holding activities in familiar, easily reachable locations improved participation.
  4. Cost: Minimising expenses for participants was crucial.
  5. Relatable leaders: Employing individuals who shared participant characteristics to lead interventions increased acceptability.
  6. Time efficiency: Combining physical activity with other daily activities made programmes more appealing.

These findings suggest that future interventions should be tailored to the specific needs and lifestyles of older adults from lower socioeconomic backgrounds to improve their physical activity levels and overall health outcomes.
